My daughter took lessons with Merel without having any knowledge about guitar and after 1 year she has made a lot of progress

Last year I started taking lessons from Merel and I am really happy with my progression so far.
Before that I have taught myself guitar for about 1.5 years. However when learning on your own it is easy to be overlooking some bad habits in technique.

Merel will spot such mistakes very quickly, sometimes before you even actually run into them, and always offers good advice on how to tackle these mistakes. Often we practice cool songs and sometimes we do some exercises. And there is always room for questions.

Merel also often sends a video after the lesson to explain a riff or exercise, which helps a lot when practicing.

Besides that there is always some room for some general chatting about good music, guitars or just about life, and the ambience is very relaxed.

So far I can highly recommend taking lessons from Merel ?

Ive been taking guitar lessons with Merel for just under a year now and I can confidently say that she is an amazing teacher and that I have learnt so much!. what I love about my lessons (other than playing guitar) is that Merel takes the time to get to know you as a person and makes you feel very welcomed and comfortable.

Iv’e been a metalhead my whole life and I’ve always wanted to play metal songs on guitar but I never thought I could do it, it seemed impossible. That was until I started lessons with Merel. Now I can play Sabaton/Avenged Sevenfold and Nightwish and more. This has all happened in under a year and I was completely new to playing guitar!

Picking up the guitar and choosing Merel as my reacher was the best thing I’ve done. I can tell she’s really passionate about teaching and seeing her students grow. I really like the way she teaches. I feel like I’ve gotten quite a bit of ear training too which is great!

She’s helped me realise that making mistakes in my lessons is totally okay, It’s part of the process of learning. I really struggled with that the start. Iv’e gotten a lot more confident with my guitar playing.
plus she has the best advice. And I’m slowly getting over my fear of tuning the high E string haha.

Overall I highly recommend Merel as a teacher! you won’t regret booking your first lesson.

After one year guitarlessons 30 years ago i started again.
It’s great to be taught by someone who understands and loves the musicstyle you like
Merel is not only a fantastic musician but also a great teacher, she has a lot of patience and her advice really suits my way of learning.
It will take some more of these 11 pack guitar lessons but I think she’ll even get me playing a 7 string

I’ve been playing the guitar on and off for a couple of years but never really felt like I’m making any significant progress, despite taking some lessons. In the face of COVID-19 pandemic, I decided that I should look into new possibilities that this situation has brought and while I’ve never really considered online guitar lessons before, upon seeing Merel’s post on Facebook, I thought it’s worth giving a try. Almost one year later, I can say with certainty that it was definitely one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.

Merel’s guidance helped me to not only develop technically but also allowed me to look at some aspects of learning the guitar (and music in general) from a different perspective, what is surely going to prove fruitful in the long run. Her approach is very student-oriented and when deciding on what to work on next she’ll always suggest something that will be beneficial for your growth as a player, all while taking into consideration your musical preferences, thus making the whole process feel natural. Over the past few months I’ve been able to correct bad habits, learn new techniques and, maybe even more importantly, I actually learned how to practice, what undoubtedly was holding me back.

Overall, if you are looking for a guitar teacher – look no more, I’d recommend Merel to anyone in a heartbeat!

I used to play some basic rock and blues style guitar many years ago, but had not played for maybe 25 years. I came from the land of Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin but had become more of a symphonic metal fan, Nightwish, Epica and similar bands. I also wanted to see if I could figure out a 7-string, and as the Covid pandemic restricted live concerts etc, I decided to pick up a guitar again, and needed a teacher.
I chose Merel after seeing her play live a couple of times, and also after meeting her briefly at an Epica concert. I was a good choice. Firstly, the Skype remote approach works well, and she combines this with small video clips and occasional tabs, as needed.
I’ve been a student of hers for about a year now, and she has helped me go from a very basic level, to feeling comfortable on a 7-string, and being able to play one particular song that a year ago would have been beyond my wildest dreams. Before Merel, I would only play standard tuning on a 6-string, but over the lessons, we’ve explored drop-D, standard-A and drop A on a 7-string and down to standard C on a six-string.
Her approach is very much based on the needs of the student. Although she chose the first song, we jointly decided what to play next, and she helps with everything from basic techniques, through to tips and coaching to constantly improve. We have covered some basic easy stuff like Rammstein, through to Metallica and onto things like Gentle Storm, Vuur and Delain.
I have developed a simple rule – “Listen to Merel”. When I started, I would get all excited, and rush ahead, and not pay attention to some of the details, but I have come to understand that there is often a lot for a relative beginner to grasp, and in some cases, you may need to unlearn bad habits if you have taught yourself. Merel will help with some real key fundamentals, down to how to hold the pick (plectrum) and even the simple action of the pick against the string or strings. Then the position of your hand, stretching fingers, left and right hand muting, all gets covered. She will also give tips on how to break a song down so you can learn and remember it, and will watch as you try and figure out how to play something, and then show you a better way to make it sound better, or she will show you how to play a section and then send a short video clip. But if I could go back in time, I would pay even more attention to the small details, because if you want to play well, they are important. So, “Listen to Merel”.
In my situation, I’ve also asked her about home recording, and again, she has provided guidance on how to do things, and even tips about the differences between playing live, and playing to record.
Not only is Merel good technically, she is a good overall coach… how to practice, when to choose something complex and challenging (a project) and when to just play something to get a quick feeling of achievement.
To sum up, I am really happy to have picked Merel as a teacher, and booked the introductory lesson. It’s a great way to start, and before I was done with the first lesson, I knew I wanted to continue, I’ve learned so much, but also know there is always more to learn. Totally recommend her as a teacher!

It’s not everyday that you get the opportunity to have your biggest role model teach you guitar! I went in already with an extensive piano background, and about 5 months figuring out guitar on my own. In fact, Merel single handedly inspired me to finally bite the bullet and pick up guitar! This is certainly a life changing experience for me.

I loved that Merel helped me fine tune some little details, such as how to hold my guitar, how to hold my pick, finger positioning, a bunch of little details like that. Honestly, I was skeptical about how Merel was going to be able to see all of these details through a computer screen. Oh boy, did she prove me wrong! I was amazed at all the little details she was able to see, helping me correct any mistakes or bad habits I had developed while learning on my own.

Merel also made it easy for me to understand certain aspects of guitar. There is only so much you can learn by looking up Youtube videos. They may show you the final results, but they won’t always tell you how to achieve those results. Thanks to the 1-on-1 interaction I had with Merel, she was able to walk me through the steps in order to achieve the final results! I still have a lot of work to put into my guitar, but Merel built some very effective stepping stones for me!

I don’t know whether or not this was intentional or not, but Merel also challenged me at times. Sometimes, she pointed out that something was wrong, and had me try to figure out what’s wrong on my own. I was normally able to figure it out, whether it be my hand is in a bad position, or I’m on the wrong fret, or whatever else may come up. She also greatly challenged me to figure out chord progressions without relying on tabs. In most cases, she would send me a video and have me watch what she is doing. I even got a little bit of ear training, although I still need to work on this. Merel will walk you through whatever you are struggling with, but at the same time she’ll try to challenge you to figure out certain things on your own. In general, you don’t want a teacher to just give you the answers all the time, otherwise how are you going to learn?

Merel has been a huge source of inspiration for me! Overall, I believe she has made me a better guitar player. This was an extremely meaningful experience for me, well worth the investment. I’m just still in awe that I got to learn from someone who I consider a role model! Merel is both a badass guitarist and a great teacher!

I purchased the lessons pack a few times already, and merel is a great teacher to learn from. She makes sure i learn on my own pace and gives me great and helpful tips every time. I started to really enjoy playing the guitar with her as my teacher. And i would definitely recommend others to follow her lessons.

After the introduction lesson, i was happy to see the 11 lesson pack arrived. Being a beginner guitar player and only knowing a few chords, Merel made sure that was no problem at all. We have the lessons through Skype and it works very well. It’s fun, she adjusts at my learning pace and gives very good tips and compliments. I enjoy the lessons and enjoy the practice.
